"The Heart of the Sea"

Titanic (1997)

3h 17min   |   Romance/Drama   |  James Cameron  |   R13+

James Cameron’s “Titanic” is a 1997 American epic, action-packed romance set against the ill-fated maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic; the pride and joy of the White Star Line and, at the time, the biggest moving thing ever created. It was the most sumptuous liner way back on its era, and called the "ship of dreams," which eventually took almost 1,500 passengers to their deaths in the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic on April 14, 1912. The film incorporates both historical and fictionalized aspects that were portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as members of different social classes who fall in love aboard the ship.

Summary

In 1996, treasure hunter Brock Lovett and his team onboard the research vessel Keldysh investigates the R.M.S Titanic's wreckage for the Heart of the Ocean, a necklace containing a rare diamond. They recover a safe containing a drawing of a young woman wearing only the necklace. It is dated April 14, 1912, the day the ship struck the iceberg. Rose DeWitt Bukater, claiming to be the person in the drawing, visits Lovett and tells of her experiences on a ship called “Titanic” when young Rose boards the departing ship with the upper-class passengers and her mother, Ruth DeWitt Bukater, and her fiancé, Caledon Hockley. Meanwhile, a drifter and artist named Jack Dawson and his best friend win third-class tickets to the ship in a game. At that time, young Rose was angry and distraught because her mother has apparently arranged the marriage. She considers committing suicide by jumping from the stern but Jack manages to pull her back over the rail after she loses her footing and nearly falls into the propellers. After the incident, Jack and Rose develop a tentative friendship, though Cal and Ruth are wary of him. Jack warned Rose about what she may be facing on their situation but Rose rebuffs Jack's advances and indicate that she prefers him over Cal.

Rose takes Jack to her state room and displays Cal's engagement present: the Heart of the Ocean. At her request, Jack sketches Rose posing nude wearing it. Little did they know, the lookouts spot an iceberg directly in the ship's path. Orders are given to turn the ship and run the engines full astern, but the ship takes too long to make the turn and the side scrapes along the iceberg, causing substantial damage to the watertight compartments. Meanwhile, Cal discovers Jack's sketch of Rose and a mocking note from her in his safe along with the necklace. Cal ordered his butler to slip the necklace into Jack's pocket and accuses him of theft. He is arrested and handcuffed to a pipe. With the ship sinking, Rose is desperate to free Jack. She was encouraged to board a life boat but she decides not to leave Jack. All the life boats have departed and passengers are falling to their deaths as the stern rises out of the water. As they both let go of the stern, the Titanic disappears into the darkness below them, and they swim to the surface to find themselves in a massive mob of passengers and crew. Within minutes, Rose and Jack find a piece of paneling and he helps her onto the wooden panel only buoyant enough for one person. As time passed by, Jack dies of hypothermia but Rose is saved when some officers return to try to find survivors. Alone on the stern of the Keldysh, Rose takes out the Heart of the Ocean, in her possession all along, she drops it into the sea over the wreck site. Rose was left with a sorrowful memory of her loved ones and was trapped in the feelings of despair.

Review & Recommendation

The storyline of this legendary movie was a rollercoaster ride. This will definitely melt the hearts of many people because of its never-ending twist. There are certain scenes that could clearly display the unconditional love they have for each other and their willingness to take risks in order to be together. You may also witness different sides of individuality when it comes to financial interests and how it changes them when money is involved. However, this movie shows that no one can ever forbid love that is real, passionate, and genuine despite the hindrances along the way. Jack Dawson really set the standard so high for a man. He chose not to be a coward and face the situation he was in. Rose, on the other hand, portrayed a girl who is brave enough to stand up for her partner. A girl who is wholeheartedly ready to fight for love. Moreover, this made me feel a wheel of emotions, it was a full package movie that delivered great intensity of satisfaction. It was a timeless classic piece that could be watched over and over again and never get old. Although it was a tragic story, various of life lessons can be gathered here as a daily reminder for ourselves. Titanic wants to voice out how life can quickly change. We may be enjoying the pleasures and desires of our hearts one moment, but then our peaceful lives can also be rapidly disturbed by the events out of our control. So, I learned how important it is to live life to the fullest and focus on the present moment. Learn to cherish every minute with someone you love. Furthermore, another lesson that I concluded was: losing even your greatest love does not mean you need to lose yourself. It simply explains that there was a phase where you would grieve and mourn, but after that you need to fight and come back much stronger to continue your dreams.

I highly recommend this movie, especially to teenagers who are looking for a beautiful love story with a touch of dreadful plot. Although, there are scenes that were a bit racy for younger kids to watch, but on top of that, the movie was really phenomenal. It felt so realistic and the camera angles were impressive because it helps to enhance the overall mood of the film. The visual effects were outstanding, particularly the flooding and sinking scenes, which brought a lot of tears to my eyes. This movie is a must-watch, and I cannot think of any movie that can ever surpass or replace this remarkable film. As I grow older, this timeless piece has had a special place in my heart, and I can clearly visualize how I feel excited when watching this movie. The director picked the entire cast wisely, whereas Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet portrayed Jack and Rose absolutely awesome. They fit into the role perfectly and the background music blends in so well, which gives an emotional impact on the viewers. Overall, the production team deserves to be applauded for making such a wonderful film. To sum up, a lot of realizations can be learned from this movie. It was inspiring to see how money does not always triumph over love, as Rose left a life of money for a life of love.

“Promise me you'll survive. That you won't give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise.” – Jack Dawson
